Every association depends on the generosity of subject matter experts.
They're the people who present at conferences, contribute to working groups, write guidance, answer member questions and volunteer their knowledge to help others in the profession. They are often the reason members join in the first place.
Yet almost every association faces the same challenge.
The experts everyone wants to hear from are usually the people with the least amount of time.
They're running businesses, leading teams, conducting research or working on the front line of their profession. They're not avoiding opportunities to share their expertise because they don't care. More often than not, they're simply balancing competing priorities.
When associations struggle to involve experts, the instinct is often to ask for more.
More presentations.
More articles.
More events.
More committee meetings.
But perhaps that's the wrong question.
Maybe subject matter experts don't need more time.
Maybe they need better ways to share the time they already have.
Expertise shouldn't only exist in one moment.
Traditional events often rely on experts being available at a very specific time.
A conference presentation takes place at 2pm on a Thursday. A webinar runs for an hour on a Tuesday afternoon. A committee meeting is scheduled weeks in advance.
If the expert can't attend, the opportunity disappears.
Even when they do participate, their knowledge is often only available to the people who happened to be there at that moment.
That's an enormous limitation.
Professional expertise shouldn't only exist within a single diary appointment. When knowledge is captured and made accessible beyond the live session, the same hour of an expert's time can continue helping members for months or even years.
Instead of asking experts to repeat themselves, associations can allow one conversation to reach far more people.
Make contributing easier, not bigger.
One reason experts decline invitations isn't because they don't want to contribute.
It's because the process often feels larger than the contribution itself.
Preparing slides, travelling to events, coordinating schedules, rehearsing presentations and finding time in already busy calendars can turn a one-hour session into several days of work.
That's a significant commitment, particularly for volunteers.
Associations that attract the best contributors often remove as much friction as possible.
Sometimes that means allowing speakers to record a session in advance. Sometimes it's replacing a formal presentation with a relaxed interview. Sometimes it's inviting an expert to answer member questions instead of preparing a forty-minute slide deck.
The easier it becomes to share expertise, the more likely experts are to say yes.
Members value authenticity more than perfection.
There's a common assumption that expert content needs to feel polished and highly produced.
In reality, members are usually looking for clarity, relevance and practical advice.
Some of the most engaging sessions aren't keynote presentations at all. They're honest conversations between experienced professionals discussing real challenges, explaining why certain decisions were made or sharing lessons they've learned through experience.
These discussions often require less preparation while delivering greater value.
They also feel more approachable.
Experts who might hesitate to stand on a conference stage are often much more comfortable having a conversation with a moderator or responding to member questions in a discussion-based format.
Creating opportunities like these helps associations involve a broader range of voices, not just the most experienced speakers.
One contribution should create many opportunities.
Every time an expert gives their time, associations have an opportunity to extend its value.
A webinar can become an on-demand learning resource.
Audience questions can inspire future guidance.
A panel discussion might provide ideas for a podcast, an article or a follow-up event.
Rather than viewing each contribution as a standalone activity, successful associations think about how one conversation can continue supporting members long after it has finished.
This benefits everyone involved.
Members gain ongoing access to trusted expertise.
Associations build stronger learning resources.
Experts know their contribution continues making a difference without requiring additional time.
Better platforms respect experts' time.
Technology can't create more hours in the day.
It can, however, make every hour count.
The right platform doesn't simply help associations deliver webinars or host events. It removes unnecessary administration, supports different ways of contributing and ensures valuable knowledge doesn't disappear once the live session ends.
More importantly, it gives experts confidence that the effort they're making will continue benefiting members well beyond the original event.
When people know their contribution will have lasting impact, saying yes becomes a much easier decision.
The goal isn't more expert time. It's more expert impact.
Every association wants access to the best minds in its profession.
The challenge has never been a lack of expertise.
It's making that expertise easier to share.
The organisations that succeed won't necessarily be the ones asking experts to contribute more often.
They'll be the ones creating flexible, engaging and efficient ways for experts to share what they already know.
Because when you respect people's time, remove unnecessary barriers and help their knowledge reach more members, everyone benefits.
Experts contribute more willingly.
Members gain better access to trusted advice.
And the association strengthens one of its greatest assets: the expertise of its community.
Help experts share knowledge without adding to their workload.
