ISO 27001 vs ISO 9001: What's the Difference and Why Does It Matter for Webinars?
4:09

When choosing a webinar provider, you'll probably come across certifications such as ISO 27001 and ISO 9001.

At WorkCast, we hold both. But what do they actually mean, and why should Financial Services organisations pay attention to them?

Although they're often mentioned together, the two standards focus on different things.

What is ISO 27001?

ISO 27001 is an internationally recognised standard for information security management.

It looks at how an organisation identifies, manages and reviews information security risks, including its policies, processes and security controls.

For Financial Services webinars, this is particularly relevant when a provider is handling attendee information, registration data or content intended for a restricted audience.

One important thing to understand: ISO 27001 certification doesn't guarantee that a security incident will never happen. It demonstrates that an organisation's information security management system has been independently assessed against the standard.

What is ISO 9001?

ISO 9001 focuses on quality management.

It looks at how an organisation manages its processes, meets customer requirements, addresses problems and makes improvements.

Think about everything involved in delivering a webinar. There's event setup, presenter preparation, technical checks, broadcast delivery and support.

Having established processes helps organisations manage these activities consistently.

ISO 9001 doesn't promise that every event will run perfectly, but it demonstrates that a provider has an independently assessed quality management system.

So, what's the difference?

ISO 27001 ISO 9001
Information security management Quality management
Focuses on managing information security risks Focuses on managing and improving quality processes
Relevant to protecting webinar information Relevant to consistent event delivery and support

Both certifications can provide useful reassurance when evaluating a webinar provider, particularly when several departments are involved in the decision.

Three things worth checking before choosing a provider

Seeing ISO certifications on a website is a good starting point, but we'd recommend looking a little further.

1. Ask to see the certificate.

Check that it's current and identifies the organisation you're considering.

2. Check what's actually covered.

A certification may apply to specific services or activities rather than everything a company offers. This is known as the certification scope.

3. Find out who issued it.

ISO doesn't certify businesses directly. Independent certification bodies carry out assessments, and you can check whether the issuing body is appropriately accredited.

In the UK, UKAS is the national accreditation body.

WorkCast Top Tip: Keep copies of relevant certificates with your supplier evaluation documents. Your IT, Procurement or Compliance teams may need them during their review.

Why does this matter for Financial Services?

If you're organising investor updates, client briefings or internal communications, you're relying on more than the webinar technology itself.

You're also relying on the organisation behind it.

ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 provide independent evidence of how a provider manages information security and quality. They don't replace your own supplier checks, but they can help you make a more informed decision.

At WorkCast, we're certified to both standards and understand the importance of working alongside Financial Services organisations' existing requirements.

Whether you're planning one webcast or a full programme of events, it's worth asking about the processes behind the platform, not just the features you see during a demonstration.
