We're back for another employee spotlight, and this month we're touching base with our UK team to catch up with Lee, one of our DevOps Engineers.
Tell us a little about what you do at WorkCast?
A DevOps Engineer introduces processes, tools, and methodologies to balance needs throughout the software development cycle. From coding and deployment, to maintenance and updates, working with both the development and operations teams. I'm also a certified Amazon Web Services Solutions Architect.
You've been part of the team for a few months now, what made you decide to apply to be a DevOps Engineer at WorkCast?
I was really interested in the job spec and knew a bit about what the business did as a whole. After speaking to Steve Smiles and Mark Rainsford, I liked the direction of travel WorkCast was going in and quickly realized they needed someone with my skill set. Steve Smiles hired me and in my first three months have brought a lot of cool technology into the mix.
What advice do you have for someone starting a new job during a pandemic?
I learned about the company and its culture. No matter the situation, offer to help, ask thoughtful questions, and develop a daily routine.
Describe a typical day for you at WorkCast?
A typical day for me starts with a few meetings in the morning followed straight away with a big mug of coffee. Then the day mostly consists of architecture, coding, building, testing, deploying, and retesting. Since DevOps is an iterative process, there is a lot of back and forth assessing each code configuration and deployment, fixing bugs, defining the next iteration, and testing.
Now for a little bit about you outside of WorkCast...
What's the last song you listened to?
Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty - Stop Draggin' My Heart Around
Give it a listen.
If you had the opportunity to broadcast one message to everyone in the whole world, what would you say?
Simple life = Happy life
What's your favourite book/movie?
The Shawshank Redemption
It's your day off, what do you have planned?
I'm fairly spontaneous but I guess a walk along the beach or in the countryside somewhere.
